Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of menus and other ephemera from the American Hotel in Kalamazoo, Michigan and dating from approximately 1882-1898.

The emphemera, dated November 28, 1912 and includes: one sample letter of recommendation, one page of notes on grammar, one list of lessons and a short story, all written on stationery belonging to the American Hotel of Kalamazoo, Michigan, all dated 1882. The back of each page is a business directory and buyer's guide for Kalamazoo, Michigan. Menu for Thanksgiving, November 28, 1912 at the American Hotel. Letterhead from the American Hotel, 1882, with notes on the English language for Mr. Phillips.

Biographical / Historical

Originally known as the American House, this hotel opened in 1844 on East Main Street east of Pitcher Street. Over the years, the hotel physically grew and changed its name several times from the American House, American Hotel, Park-American Hotel and Harris Hotel. It remained in operation until 1968 and the structure came down the next year.
