Hugh J. Moser Graphic Design Collection
Scope and Contents
The Hugh J. Moser Graphic Design Collection was donated by Ruth Moser the wife of the late Hugh J. Moser (1925-2009). Hugh Moser was a graphic designer who worked for the Upjohn Company. He retired in 1990 as the art director in the International Advertising Division of the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The materials represent a view of the field of graphic design / commercial art just before computers became widely used in the design process.
The items include a wide range of materials on the profession collected by Moser throughout his career. There are serials, pamphlets and guides for budgeting and estimating, the creative process, layout and design, illustration, photography, typography, mechanical art, graphic arts processes, platemaking, paper, ink, printing processes, die cutting and embossing, binding and finishing and specialty printing. There are also brochures, packets and catalogs provided by type foundries, papermakers, photographers and other vendors. Books related to printing and graphic design were also included in this donation all of which have been cataloged separately and are searchable through the Western Michigan University Libraries online catalog.

Abstract
Pamphlets, guides, serials, samples, packets, and catalogs collected by Upjohn Company graphic designer Hugh J. Moser (1925-2009) relating to the field of graphic design / commercial art from the mid to late twentieth century. Materials on budgeting, estimating, creative process, layout, design, illustration, photography, typography, platemaking, paper, ink, printing processes, die cutting, embossing, binding, finishing and specialty printing.
Arrangement Note
The collection is divided into two series: 1) 2010 Donation (8 boxes) and 2) 2012 Donation (5 boxes). This reflects the fact that the collection was received in two separate donations. The materials in the 2010 donation were organized as much as possible by category of item (typography, stock photography, etc.). The 2012 donation follows the exact order that Moser kept the materials in himself because this portion of the donation included a typed outline created by Moser listing his materials by category.
