Biography
Essie G. Byrd (nee Leach) was born to coal miner Henry W. L. Leach (1863-1903) and his wife Gemina T. Leach (nee Hawks) (1867-1954) in Ohio. Essie had three sisters including: Mabel L. Leach (later Saunders) (1890-1967), Ada Leach (1898-1917), Kathryn Leach (later Smith), Mary C. Leach (later Smith) (1894-1975). Essie later died in Los Angeles, California on November 6, 1984.

Scope and Contents
The collection contains thirty-six photographs from the Byrd and Leach families from Michigan and Ohio dating from 1880 to 1929.
Those pictured are sons-in-law, children and friends including Pauline Johnson; Essa Byrd’s family including Mary Katherine’s husband, Charles H. Smith, and her sons Robert Adrian Smith, Harold D. Smith and Frederick D. Smith.
