Scope and Contents Harry goes into great detail about the pursuit of John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate soldiers who raided Ohio during June and July of 1863. By the time he writes the letter Morgan has been captured by Union troops but he does give information about what his unit did in chasing Morgan and his men. The collection contains one letter dated November 13, 1864 by Civil War soldier Jacob Hampton (1847-1929) from Pavilion, Michigan while enlisted in the First Regiment Michigan Engineers and Mechanics and addressed to his sister while stationed in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the letter, he discusses daily life and reports on Confederate troop movements.

This collection is mostly comprised of family letters, dealing mostly with the Holden and Ashley families. The range of dates is from 1858 to 1964. Although the majority of the letters are between 1858 till about 1920. These letters are mostly addressed to Harriet and Jerome Ashley from their children, Harriet’s siblings and their children. Harriet and Jerome lived in Calhoun county Michigan for a majority of their lives.
