Allegan County Railroad Book
Scope and Contents
The leather front cover identifies the book as one to record railway levels on Allegan County. The entire book’s pages are filled mostly with rows of what are likely measurements, with a few pages dedicated to quick equations and calculations. The measurements are usually accompanied by a few notes, possibly locations where the measurements were taken. The location levels claim to be from station 2344 to Plaster Creek in Grand Rapids, MI. What could be the station numbers are included next to some of the measurement tables.

Biographical / Historical
With the incorporation of the Allegan and Marshall Railroad Company in 1836, directors began to plan out railways for passage between cities, connecting Marshall and Allegan by going through Battle Creek, Comstock, and Kalamazoo (then known as Bronson). A couple of projects were planned for Grand Rapids railroads around 1848, with surveys completed, but no actual projects were built until several years later. In 1868, several changes of routes and maps led to the creation of the Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Grand Rapids Railroad Company. The railroad extensions were built by late 1868, with the road being leased to the Michigan Southern Railroad Company. Further railroads continued to be constructed in Michigan during the later 1800s, extending out to Chicago and into Indiana. This railroad book was likely from the time when the railroads were being constructed through Allegan County.

Physical Description
Overall, the book is in decent condition. The front cover of the book has seen quite a bit of wear over the years, with the binding faded and some slight peeling damage along the edges. The first couple and last couple of pages have the worst discoloration, though the rest of the paper has some browning along the edges. One of the first few pages of the book has been torn, with a significant piece of it missing entirely. No other pages are damaged to this extent. Despite its age, the binding has held up remarkably well. Some of the pencil marks have been either smeared or faded slightly, but most of the writing in the book is legible. There are small, miscellaneous stains scattered amongst the pages of the book, but nothing obscuring or severe.
