James A. Garfield Commemorative Funeral Pamphlet
Scope and Contents
The collection is composed of a single pamphlet from the commemorative funeral service of former President James A. Garfield held at the Presbyterian Church at Kalamazoo on Monday, September 26, 1881. Printed on the front page is “Funeral Services, Commemorative of the Life and Virtues of James Abram Garfield, Late President of the United States” followed by the date and place of the event. This pamphlet was printed by the Kalamazoo Publishing Co. as stated by small text found on the bottom of the front page. Inside the pamphlet the “Order of Exercises” can be found, with a listing of the hymns, passages, and orators at the ceremony.

Biographical / Historical
On July 2, 1881, United States President James A. Garfield (1831-1881) was shot at a train station in Baltimore, Maryland by Charles Guiteau. The President died over two months later on September 19, 1881. Many towns and cities across the country held memorial services for James Garfield on the same day as the actual funeral. First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo held a service on September 26, 1881.
