Biographical / Historical

The materials in this collection relate to the activities of the Kalamazoo Torch Club 2006 and 2020. The Kalamazoo Torch Club was founded in 1929 with the purpose of facilitating and hosting the exchange of intellectual ideas between members of the Kalamazoo community. The Kalamazoo Torch Club is a branch of the International Association of Torch Clubs, which operates similar clubs in many cities across the country. All members must apply for membership and pay dues. Certain professions like academics, physicians, lawyers, and other professional occupations are sought after as potential members of the Torch Club.

The members of the Kalamazoo Torch Club meet monthly at the Park Club (219 W. South St.) in downtown Kalamazoo for presentations, dinners, and discussions. The speakers at these events include members of the club, local public figures, or guest speakers from visiting institutions. The presentations range in topic, drawing mostly from the fields of science, history, literature, and current events. Due to the nature of the topics discussed in club meetings, the Kalamazoo Torch Club forbids the promotion of certain political, religious, or social ideas. The club states the goal is to maintain a sense of neutrality so that a meaningful and civil conversation can blossom.
