This collection contains a single diary covering the year 1912, formerly belonging to Reuben Bennett (1848-1919) in Albion, Michigan.

The diary is called Miles’ Combination Diary of memorandum, and contains useful information including census numbers. Following the initial page detailing the diary’s publisher and information is an information page. While largely blank the writer’s name, R. Bennett, address, 705 North Division Street Albion, Michigan, and phone number, 182, are listed. Information largely deals with the day to day activities of Reuben Bennett including his contact with others, his job, the weather, and his general health.

Reuben Bennett Bio

Reuben Bennett was born to Elsie Sustire Bennett and Arthur B. Bennett in 1848 and lived to the age of 71, dying in 1919. In 1872 he married his wife, Ornissa Pierce Bennett (1848-1932), with whom he had five children. Out of his five children, three survived to adulthood; Elsie, Alice, and Alta. His daughter Alta married Fred Merrit, and Elise married Milo Van Nortwick.

Although he briefly lived in Tekamah, Nebraska, Reuben spent most of his life residing in Calhoun County, Michigan including Albion.

Physical Description

The collection occupies a single folder taking up 0.05 cubic feet of space.

The diary measures 5 ½” by 2 ½”. It has a black cover with ‘Diary 1912’ written in gold on the front, surrounded by what appears to be a scroll of sorts. The inner pages have curved outer edges colored red, while the pages themselves are a cream color, slightly yellowed with age. The text includes printed information and handwritten entries, written mostly in pencil and decently legible. The back is the same patterned black as the cover but without any embellishment.
