Biographical / Historical

The first City Drug Store was opened in 1902 by Frank J. Maus (11/10/1881-3/17/1934). Located at 238 East Main St. (now Michigan Ave.) Maus owned City Drug Store until 1920. In 1921 Clarence Stanley Triestram (4/11/1896-2/11/1960) bought the Main St. location. By 1924 there were two City Drug Stores the second located at 1717 East Main St. By 1929 a third location had been added at 101 East Paterson. The three locations of City Drug Store were owned and operated by Clarence and his two brothers Ray (6/16/1892-9/1967) and Glen (5/29/1900-10/19/1979). The brothers operated all three locations until 1959. In 1959 the first location at 238 East Main became Piper's City Drugs. However, by 1961 all three locations of City Drugs were again listed in the Kalamazoo city directories. These continued operation until 1971, when only the second location at 1717 East Main is still listed. After 1971 all three locations are gone from the directories.

The DeWitt's 200 Year Calendar and Book of Horoscopes included in this collection was published by E.C. DeWitt and Co. of Chicago, Illinois. DeWitt was a maker of preparations and medicines for various ailments sold at City Drug Store and other drugstores around the country.
