 Collection
Identifier: RH-A-3815

Scope and Contents

The Pere Marquette Railroad was formed in 1900 as a result of a merger between the Chicago and West Michigan, the Flint and Pere Marquette, and the Detroit Grand Rapids and Western Railroads. In 1947 Pere Marquette formally merged with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. These ledgers, which were bound by Dean Hicks Co. Grand Rapids, contain a record of the injuries and deaths that took place from 1912-1915. The 1912-1913 ledger begins with injury number A4539 and ends with injury number R4699. The 1913-1915 ledger begins with injury number R4700 and goes through injury number R6869. Most of the injuries were work related, however some passengers were injured or killed. There are multiple entries of “Trespassers,” those who were hit and killed by the train on the railroad tracks. Each entry includes the date, injury number, station, name, occupation, cause of injury and the injury sustained. The injuries listed took place around Michigan, Chicago, Northern Indiana, Southern Ontario and the Toledo, Ohio area.
