This journal is the regular meeting notes from the Wadsworth post, no. 49 GAR in Lawrence Michigan. The writing in this journal includes some of the topics discussed at these regular meetings. Such topics discussed are who was not present at the meetings, fines for various things, motions discussed. A few different members were in charge of writing down meeting notes from week to week.
Biographical / Historical
The Grand Army of the Republic or GAR was an organization founded for veterans of the Civil War.
John H. Shoemaker was enlisted in company C, fourth cavalry July 15, 1862 at age 20, he served 3 years until 1865. Shoemaker held this position from 1897 to 1901. Charles Cook also held the position of taking meeting notes, he had been enlisted into the Civil War in company D, western sharpshooters on August 18, 1862. Cook was 23 when he enlisted and served 3 years and was discharged at his expiration of his term of services in 1865.

This collection amounts to .10 cubic feet and contains a single journal from the Grand Army of the Republic Wadsworth Post No. 49 located in Lawrence, Michigan. It measures 7 ½” x 12” and is in good condition. The binding is coming apart a little in the back. All pages are still bound together. Pages are in good condition and are easily readable. There are some clippings in this journal like newspaper articles.
