His father was born in Connecticut about 1801, and his mother in New York about 1814. The two married in 1840 in Geauga County, Ohio, before moving to Trumbull County. Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet, and is composed of a 3.75” x 2.625” photograph of a Union Civil War soldier. The photo is a sepia colored Carte de Visite, and an example of a Memento Mori photograph, being taken after the soldier’s death. The photo is overlaid on a thicker, cream colored piece of paper, which borders the photo and also contains two red lines that parallel the photo. The photo depicts a deceased young Union Civil War soldier standing at attention with his rifle. A stool can be seen in the background on the soldier’s right, and an American Flag on his left. The words Mrs. E. A. Whipple written in blue cursive on the backside of the photo.

The photo is in fairly good condition. There are small tears at the top and bottom of the border. There are two rectangular discolorations along the bottom and right side of the photo, as well as a more substantial tear, likely the result of tape. The back of the photo has a few small, brown discolorations.

Provenance

The collection is composed of a Carte de Visite of a Union Civil War soldier, taken shortly after December 20, 1864.
