Carl attended Western Michigan University in the late 1960s and received his degree in communication in 1970. He discusses student activity in the anti-war movement and protests, civil rights activities, politicalism and radicalism on campus.

Oral history interview with David Molenaar, conducted by James Shiley on June 2, 1995. Molenaar discusses the political and cultural climate of the United States in the 70s and 80s and how the unrest impacted WMU campus. Molenaar was a student journalist at WMU. He wrote for the Kalamazoo News newspaper in the 1980s.
