Ardis Pierce and Wayne Loney Collection

The Kalamazoo Police Department traces its beginnings to 1882. These ledgers record a variety of calls the department received many of which dealt with animals, both alive and deceased, theft, assaults, lost items, accidents, missing children, rubbish, dangerous sidewalks and people who were inebriated.The entries record the reports but do not cover what the police did to deal with what was being reported.

Claude Robinson Ledger

Scope and Contents

Claude Robinson (1880-1957) lived in Leonidas, Michigan. He owned a blacksmith shop where he occasionally created custom cabinets, shelves etc. His shop was located downtown on Main Street in Leonidas. He worked until he passed away at age 77. This ledger contains all expenditures and transactions that took place from January 1, 1908-August 30, 1909. He frequently did shoeing jobs and repaired buggies among other tasks. Dr. Syndergaard’s notes on the ledger are located in the donor file.

Farrell Products Company Ledger

The collection is composed of one black leather-bound ledger from Farrell Products Company in Dowagiac, MI. The ledger contains the company by-laws, records of meeting minutes, and records of stockholders and stockholder meetings. The entries in the ledger range from 1923 to 1925.

Ferris Wilcox Ledger

The children sketched on some of the pages were probably Rhea and Martha Mcewen, the daughters of H. C. Mcewen. H. C. Mcewen worked for the public highways in Leonidas in 1888. They signed her name to a few pages. Rhea Mcewen was born in 1912 and Martha Mcewen was born in 1914, both in Leonidas, Michigan.

Galesburg High School Alumni Association Ledger

One ledger kept by the Galesburg High School Alumni Association from about 1897-1930. There are 7 alphabetical index tabs in the front that were not used for indexing, instead the accounting of dues paid to the association, and the names of the members who paid them, begin here. The ledger also contains accounting for the association with entries of cash balances and expenses. There are no markers of where one type of information ends and another begins, and sometimes they overlap.

General Bissel Humphrey Papers

This collection is comprised of materials relating to General Bissel Humphrey (approximately 1792 – 1855). The materials in this collection are from 1855 to 1861.

The ledger in this collection was written by George S. Clark, the executor of Gen. Humphrey’s estate. The ledger begins in August of 1855 and ends in January of 1861. The payments made include mortgages on properties held by the deceased, medical bills for his wife, funeral arrangements, and payments to individuals.

General Farm ledger

This collection consists of one ledger possibly from a local farmer in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The range of the material is from 1888-1901. The ledger tracks farm expenses of the unnamed farmer, the farms of Frank Milham and Noah Bryant, and keeps track of a “wood account” which recorded lumber purchased by various individuals.

Hiram B. Valentine Collection

Scope and Contents This collection consists of the personal ledger of Hiram B. Valentine, a resident of Brady Township, Kalamazoo, MI, who ran a 40-acre farm along with his wife and four children. This collection was acquired by Dr. Sharon Carlson thanks to the Starring Endowment, in 2012. The ledger contained in this collection lists the wages paid to various farm laborers for certain tasks, as well as things related to the production of various goods (i.e., wheat, corn, butter, leather, etc.) and business...
