Abstract

This collection is mainly composed of Reverend Theodore Lochbihler’s writing and correspondence during his time in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The papers themselves encompass the years between 1908 and 1933.

Biographical / Historical

Reverend Theodore Lochbihler (1870-1942) was born and worked in Michigan as an assistant pastor at St. Augustine Church, Kalamazoo, Michigan and a pastor at St. Joseph, St, Joseph, Michigan. Also during his time in Kalamazoo he was a resident at Borgess Hospital and a chaplain at Nazareth Academy. He donated the bell for the Sisters of St. Joseph and named it after his mother in 1904. He is buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Nazareth.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The material originally came to the Regional History Collections in 2019 with the other material from the deposited Congregation of St. Joseph materials (A-4152). In 2025 the collection was transferred formerly to the Regional History Collections.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .25 cubic feet and contains loose notebook paper, printed paper, and handwritten letters. These papers contain information on Reverend Lochbihler’s business correspondence, letters to Nazareth, personal writings including histories, and letters of congratulation to the Reverend. All handwritten notes are in pencil or ink.

The collection is in fairly good condition. The pages are yellowing but there are no significant stains or tears. Most of the print and handwritten notes are legible. Only some of them are beginning to fade.
