Kalamazoo League of Women Voters Voting Guides

 Collection
Identifier: RH-A-4457

Scope and Contents

The guides contain a variety of information about the current elections, including information on candidates (like age, party, address, and general running platform), voter registration, polling places, proposed bills, and more. When electing candidates, the guides seem to try to get information from the candidates themselves in order to give them a platform to campaign. Candidates running for certain positions are asked the same question, listed... at the beginning of their section, with candidates’ answers following. Some candidates didn’t respond, and are listed as such. The guides from 2009 onwards also include links to other sources on candidates and the elections. The back cover of the 2009 guide has a single section translated into Spanish concerning the US 2010 Census, with information on how to complete a form and who needed to fill it out. The guides claim and attempt to present non-biased information about candidates and proposals. A brief table of contents is usually included on the back of the larger versions as well. Depending on the offices up for reelection, the length of the guides varies. The guide from 1959 also bears some handwritten notes, likely added after the election that disclose the results.

Biographical / Historical

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to educating voters to give them the opportunity to make informed decisions during elections. The LWV was founded in February of 1920, not long before women obtained the right to vote in the US by members of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Kalamazoo’s League of Women Voters was founded just five months afterwards in July. The 19th amendment was ratified the next month... in August of 1920. After campaigning for the establishment of the UN, the LWV was recognized as one of the first non-governmental organizations by the UN around 1945. With the return of televised presidential debates in 1976, the LWV received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting Journalism for their sponsorship of the debate. The LWV also sponsored presidential debates in 1980 and 1984, but withdrew their sponsorship in 1988, citing demands for increasingly partisan conditions. The League of Women Voters continued to advocate for voter and election reform, including support of the National Voter Registration Act in 1993 and the Help America Vote Act in 2002. The LWV continues to operate today, including their funding of Vote 411, a website similarly dedicated to providing election and voter information.

Abstract

The collection is composed of a variety of voter’s guides distributed by the Kalamazoo League of Women Voters ranging from 1959 to 2015.

Physical Description

The guides range in size between 8.5 by 11 inches and 22 by 17 inches when completely unfolded. Overall, the collection is in good condition. There are few tears on the papers, with little to no tattering present. The 1959 guide has a piece of tape stuck to the upper left corner with significant staining beneath it. The stain bleeds through to the opposite side of the paper, though it does not entirely obscure any writing. The guides from 1959 through 1973 all feature some sort of stamp from the Kalamazoo Public Library, as well as some other handwritten identification, like the item’s intended location and/or classification. The guides from 2009 onwards have all been folded a few times, and bear deep creases as a result. Otherwise, the papers have held up well.
