Kalamazoo Church Directories

 Collection
Identifier: RH-A-4456

Scope and Contents

The collection contains four directories. The three smaller directories were published by the Ministerial Alliance of Kalamazoo, while the largest is supported by the Churches Committee of Kalamazoo. Each directory features a list of churches, church staff, and usually times of operation and addresses. The directory from 1969 functions more as a contact list with the churches listed by type and phone numbers listed next to priest and reverends’ names.... The smaller booklets also include information about the officers with the organizations that published them. The directory from 1969 has quite a few handwritten additions inside, from corrections, to additional contacts, or additional information. It also has a newspaper clipping stapled to one of the pages inside.

Biographical / Historical

The directories have a variety of publishers, from the Ministerial Alliance of Kalamazoo, to Kalamazoo’s Chamber of Commerce, to the Kalamazoo Kiwanis Club. They include churches in Kalamazoo and in the Kalamazoo area. While many of the churches in the directories have since closed or moved locations, some are still standing. The Congregation of Moses on 2501 Stadium Dr, for example, is listed in each of the directories, and can still be found at... that location. Nowadays, the modern directories are online for more convenience.

Abstract

The collection is composed of four church directories from Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo area from 1956 to 1969.

Physical Description

The collection ranges in size between 3.5 inches and 5.5 inches at the smallest and 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches at the largest. The three smaller directories are booklets, with staple bindings. The largest directory is a folding pamphlet.

Overall, the collection is in good condition. Three of the directories have a stamp somewhere on them from the Kalamazoo Public Library, though most are in non-obscuring areas. The 1956 directory, however, has a stamp on every single page of the booklet, though the ink is usually faint enough that the writing beneath is legible. Aside from minor markings and minor aging, the directories have held up well. The staples in the two smaller directories haven’t rusted, and the bindings are intact.
