Biographical / Historical

The Other Side’s first volume and issue was published in 1994, calling itself a grassroots newspaper. The content was directed towards African-American and Black readers, featuring news about African-American people in politics, Black history, and featured an interview of a notable Black singer, with plans continue the interview in a future issue. It is possible that only one volume was released, and other issues weren’t published for some reason. Considering the slots that weren’t filled by advertisers, perhaps the newspaper was having issues with funding, and therefore had to cancel publications. Buddy Hannah, a Kalamazoo poet, writer, and publisher, was the newspaper’s editor.

Abstract

The collection is composed of a single premier issue of The Other Side, published in 1994.

Physical Description

The newspaper measures 11 inches x 16 inches when folded, and 22 inches x 16 inches when unfolded. The newspaper is made up of two large pieces of paper folded inside each other, with no binding holding them together. Overall, the newspaper is in good condition. The paper seems to have aged a bit at the edges, but the discoloration isn’t very major. There are very little, if any rips in the paper. The newspaper was folded in half horizontally down the middle at some point, leaving a deep crease that refuses to let the paper lie flat. This does not obscure any writing or seem to be tearing at all.
