Biographical / Historical

What was originally Will Keith Kellogg’s summer home on Gull Lake, MI, was repurposed during WWII for rehabilitation of patients from Percy Jones Hospital in 1944. After the Percy Jones Hospital closed down in 1954 and the military had left in 1950, the property was returned to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, where it remained empty for about a year. After W.K. Kellogg passed in 1951, the Foundation gave the property to Michigan State College, who used it as a research and education site called the Kellogg Gull Lake Biological Station. The building was also used for various purposes throughout the years like becoming a girls’ dorm, a conference center, a meeting place, and for administration purposes. In 1998 the W.K. Kellogg Foundation gave Michigan State University a large sum of money to renovate the manor, after which it was opened to the public for tours, weddings, and various other events.

Physical Description

Folded, the newsletter measures 7 inches by 9.5 inches, while unfolded it measures 14 inches by 9.5 inches. Overall, the collection is in good condition. The paper has held up quite well with little, if no noticeable tears or creases at all. The booklet is missing its staple binding, and the signs of rust on the paper imply that they were removed due to poor condition. There is some staining on the back cover, though this does not obscure any writing or pictures. There are a few spots of discoloration throughout the newsletter, though none are very major or obscuring.
