Biographical / Historical
Founded with the goal of improving the economic and social conditions of famers in 1867, the Grange movement was an agricultural and political movement that emerged in the late 19th century. The Grange encouraged farmers to cooperate to reduce costs and improve profits, leading to the formation of cooperatives for buying and selling goods. The Grange movement was also a political movement, pushing for reforms like railroad and grain elevator regulations,... industries which often exploited farmers. Beyond these goals, the Grange also promoted educational and social well-being among its members, with meetings that included lectures and activities aimed at improving farmers’ lives. Within the Grand Rapids Press, there are articles providing updates on what the Kent County Pomona Grange was doing during this period.
