Biographical / Historical

The Kalamazoo Goss Furniture shop located on 450 West Main St. was started by Lindsey Goss around 1914 after his other Goss Furniture store in Plainwell closed down. Goss furniture had a history of putting an emphasis on design. The shop often had window displays of furniture, and it was not uncommon for design or retail students to put together a display using the store’s products. Goss’s business went well enough that he could afford to build an extension to his original property, partly for leasing, for apartments, and other retail. In 1924, both the store and the apartments caught fire, destroying quite a bit of stock in the process, though there seem to have been no casualties. Goss was able to rebuild, opening back up in 1925. In 1932, Goss Furniture was sold to Paul Barr after the Goss had to retire due to ill health. The business closed down again in 1940.

Physical Description

Folded, the magazine measures 8.5 inches by 11.5 inches, while unfolded it measures 17 inches by 11.5 inches. The magazine is in decent condition. It was folded in half at some point horizontally, leaving a deep crease down the middle. There is significant discoloration and aging on all of the pages, especially around the edges. There are various tears along the edges of the paper, especially on the cover, though nothing major. The back cover has significant discoloration and aging, with the corners of the stamp beginning to peel, though it doesn’t seem in any danger of coming off.
