Scope and Contents

The booklet features fourteen different houses on its tour, open from September 10th through October 2nd, 1960. Each house listing includes a picture of the exterior, a photo of the person who worked on it, a floor plan, and a brief description of the home. The rest of the booklet is filled with promotions for various home building and furnishing related businesses, like carpet makers, tilers, insulation, electrical, and lumber. All of the homes included also come with furnishings, with sponsors of their own. A few different neighborhoods are also advertised throughout the booklet, along with another parade of homes in another neighborhood. A large map is also included of the various houses available for tour, with their addresses, building companies, and open times listed along the sides.

Biographical / Historical

The Grand Rapids Home Builders Association, or the Home Builders Association of Greater Grand Rapids (HBAGGR) was founded in 1945 by 18 builders and chartered by the National Association of Home Builders. The nonprofit organization’s goal is to completing building projects while adhering to ethical practices, community involvement, advocacy, and education. Today, its members consist of both contractors with a builder’s license and suppliers who provide products and services to the industry. The Parade of Homes is an event that allows interested persons to purchase tickets to tour a group of homes done in a variety of styles in the same neighborhood. HBAGGR continues to host Parade of Homes today, with 2024 being its 65th year of doing so.

Folded, the booklet measures 8.5 inches by 11 inches, while unfolded it measures 8.5 inches by 22 inches. Overall, the booklet is in good condition. The coloring is still vibrant, and all of the words are legible. None of the pages are ripped or creased. The binding has held up well, with only some slightly faded wear marks on the cover to show for use.
