Biographical / Historical
The 1950 Greater Kalamazoo Exposition was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kalamazoo, with the intention of promoting industrial enterprises in Kalamazoo. It was held at the County Center building. The plan was to only charge vendors for their space while leaving admission free with proceedings over a certain amount to be donated to the Kalamazoo Society for Crippled Children. Brochures and pamphlets like this one were likely mailed out to potential vendors about a month in advance. The exposition was intended to showcase Kalamazoo manufacturers, as is evidenced by their exposition slogan: What Kalamazoo Makes, Makes Kalamazoo. Some of the vendors included the Upjohn Company, the Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company, Gibson Incorporated, the Ingersoll Division of the Borg-Wagner Corporation, the Shakespeare Company, and the Kalamazoo Tank and Silo Company. Even more public institutions like the Kalamazoo public museum and the city-council health department reportedly purchased exhibit spaces. The exposition reportedly drew in 20,000 people over the course of its 5 days, with 6,000 people alone attending the final day. The funds the Rotary Club collected were used to purchase a bus for the Cerebral Palsy Training Center, which was used to transport children between the center and their homes.
