Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church Service Announcement

 Item — Box: 1
Identifier: RH-A-4422

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a single flyer which announces a service held by Dr. Nathaniel Hawthorne Jeltz, a visiting Evangelist, called “Special Revival and Inter-Racial Emancipation Service.” The program is planned out for over six days, starting on August 6, 1941, and ending on August 12, with Saturday the 9th taken as a rest day. The last service on August 12 is notably an interracial service, intended to be attended by both black and white people. Since the Allen Chapel AME is an African-American church, the event of having an interracial service is not insignificant. For Sunday, August 10, when multiple events are taking place throughout the day, specific times are listed. A picture of Jeltz is included with a brief blurb about his accomplishments further down on the paper.

Biographical / Historical

The Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is the oldest African-American church in Kalamazoo, founded in 1855 and still operating today. Dr. N. H. Jeltz, despite travelling across the country to perform emancipation ceremonies, is also referred to as Allen Chapel AME’s secretary of the Commission of Evangelism on a couple different occasions. He’d performed before with the Allen Chapel, like he did in 1925. As the church expanded over the years, it relocated a couple times, such as in 1867 and 1914, then finally in 1980 relocating to the former Simpson United Methodist Church, where the AME still operates today. Over the course of its history, the church has had around 42 ministers, with the Reverend at the time of the service, James A. Dean serving from 1940 to 1944. Although the church’s members tend to consist of the older population in recent years, the church still regularly holds events, services, and funerals.

Abstract

The collection is composed of a paper announcing an interracial emancipation service program held for a week in August of 1941, at the Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Physical Description

The paper measures 8 ½” by 11”. The paper is in decent condition. While all of the words are legible, the paper has browned with age, especially at the edges. There are several tears along the edge of the paper, none of which obscure any writing. None of the tears are especially large, but small sections of the paper’s edge have been torn away.
