Scope and Contents
The front of the pamphlet announces the cooking school, where it took place, and when, also mentioning one of the event’s sponsors. The pamphlet lists 24 different recipes, along with a chart for veal cuts and a suggested children’s luncheon. The back of the pamphlet lists different prizes to be given away during the cooking school, along with their respective sponsors.

Biographical / Historical
The Kalamazoo Gazette does not mention a cooking school event taking place in October of 1939, despite that being the date advertised on the pamphlet. The recipes listed in the booklet tend to serve larger numbers of people, along with the inclusion of a children’s menu, suggesting that the event was meant for families or directed towards them. The recipes tend to use lard in the ingredients, since lard was not shunned as a cause of heart disease until the 1950s. Baking soda is also referred to as simply “soda.” Each meal on the children’s menu includes some form of meat, some sort of starch, usually potatoes, vegetables, and some kind of fruit.

Overall, the pamphlet is in good shape. The writing is all clear and legible, and the color hasn’t faded much. There is one page where a section has been cut or torn out, presumably some sort of coupon or other removable feature. The tear line is a bit uneven, and there is a small tear in the page, but the writing is still legible, and the page is still mostly intact.
