Biographical / Historical

Isaac S. Knapp was born 1831, and died in 1914, at the age of 82. After the war, Knapp returned to Michigan and lived in the Galesburg/Comstock area for the rest of his life. He joined the Freedmen’s Bureau to help in teaching, and he worked as a farm laborer for the rest of his life, having learned about the trade when he was young. In the late 1880s, Knapp began to apply for a pension because of the health problems brought on by his service—he'd had complications with a bad case of measles and later rheumatism that had left him with an impaired right eye and partially lame. He was married to his wife Harriet Knapp in 1858. She was buried next to him in 1914 after she died a week after him.

Physical Description

The paper measures 11” by 8 ½”. At the top of the document, beneath the title “To whom it may concern:” in large, printed font, there is a printed picture of an eagle on a background of stars. Next to the picture and partially overlapping the writing above it, there is a handwritten note written vertically as opposed to horizontally like the rest of the document. The following bulk of the document varies between printed cursive font and handwritten cursive that was filled in the blanks.

The paper is in good condition despite its brown hue, which is likely due to the original paper it was printed on, and its age. There are two horizontal creases across the document, as if it were folded into thirds. There is a dark but see-through smear of something over the word “fifth,” but the writing is still legible underneath. Otherwise, there are a few other marks, but none that obscure any writing. The words are all perfectly legible.
