Scope and Contents

The collection is composed of two identical pamphlets created by Elmer A. Aseltine, commissioner for Van Buren County. The pamphlets originated in Paw Paw in August 1902. These two pamphlets were put together by Elmer A. Aseltine, commissioner for Van Buren County Michigan at the time.

Biographical / Historical

Elmer Adelbert Aseltine was born in Swanton, Vermont on September 3, 1865 to Anson and Lucy (Carmon) Aseltine. At an early age he was investing in college education. He entered the Civil Engineering department of the University in April 1885 to April 1888, was a corporal and sergeant in the corps of cadets, editor-in-chief of the Reveille, 1887-1888, member of a fraternity. In recognition of his work as an educator, he was conferred a degree of B.S. in course as for 1889.

In June 1888, he moved to Michigan where he was a Principle of Gobleville High School, 1890-1987; school examiner of Van Buren County, Michigan, 1895-1898; superintendence of schools in Hartford, Michigan, 1899-1900; commissioner of schools, Van Buren County, 1901-1907. He was district agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Milwaukee, headquartered in Paw Paw, Michigan, 1897-1899. Since 1907, he grew fruit on a farm near Paw Paw.

He married Minnie Barton of Paw Paw on August 19, 1891. They had two children: Lucile, born May 20, 1892 and died in 1901; and Leland, born May 5, 1893.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and is composed of two pamphlets dated August 28, 1902 for Van Buren County in Michigan. Each pamphlet measures the same, 5 ½ x 7 ¼ inches. The pamphlet is not bound by anything folded to make the pamphlet.

The pamphlets have four pages which contain a typed list of legally qualified teachers for Van Buren County. Each page contains what type of certificate the teacher has then the name plus what town, township, county, or city they live in. The front cover page has a header then continues on with the certificate types and teachers. The certificates go from State certificates, university, college, state normal-life, normal certificates-term, first grade, second grade certification, third grade and primary teachers. Also, is listed is when the certificate expires. The pamphlets are printed typed pages in black ink. There are different typefaces on the pamphlets.

The pamphlets are in good condition although there is some wear along the edges and yellowed pages. There are some creases from being folded over the years. The back of one of the booklets is dirty with a few stains. The printed typed pages are still legible, with just some of the ink faded away.
