Biographical / Historical

Active between 1927-1991 in the Village of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The Schoolcraft Prairie Extension club was offered as a service from Michigan State University and the United States Department of Agriculture for women in the home to work together to develop various “homemaking” skills. At the time of its founding in 1927 the club was called the Schoolcraft Prairie Home Demonstration Club until it became part of the statewide Michigan Association of Extension Homemakers (MAEH). Local women from the Kalamazoo area gathered in Schoolcraft to be instructed in the study of topics such as current events, improving family relations, nutrition, clothing, interior design, hair styling, finances, travel, and home entertainment. Additional activities included Special Interest group activities such as ceramics, jewelry making, painting, basket weaving, beading, plant husbandry, and fiber arts.

Members of the club also organized and attended events such as the Kalamazoo County Fair, Achievement Day, mock United Nations, and various tea parties held at the County Center building. Many of these events helped the club to raise funds for various philanthropic causes such as the Red Cross, Kalamazoo Children’s Home, Korean War aid, and donating food to local families in need. In 1991, the MAEH joined a national organization and became the Michigan Association of Family and Community Education (MAFCE). After this change, the Schoolcraft Prairie Extension Club dissolved. Though similar programs have developed into other MSU Extension organizations such as 4-H.

This collection is composed of one legal-sized Hollinger box, totaling 0.50 cubic feet of material. Many of these pages and the items adhered to them show distinct signs of aging such as discoloration, brittle-ness, and staining from the adhesive. Any included handwriting is done in ink on paper. Some pink-colored paper is used and the writing appears to have been done on a typewriter. Overall, much of the collection is in a fragile state and should be handled with care.
