Andrew Jackson Easton diaries
Scope and Contents
This collection is composed of thirty-two diaries written by Andrew Jackson Easton (1834-1920) from 1869-1914. The diaries detail the daily life of Andrew, a general farmer who lived in Berrien Center, Michigan. The winter months focus on activities such as woodcutting and selling. The warmer months focus on farming activities for both livestock and produce. The fall months focus on picking produce and harvesting crops.

Biographical / Historical
Andrew Jackson Easton (1834-1920) was born September 30, 1834. He was a farmer, prominent citizen and Supervisor of Berrien Township. In 1855, Andrew married Miss Emmarillis P. Willis (1836-1894) and later had seven children. Andrew was also a member of the Free Masons, a member of the United Workmen at Eau Claire and has been Master of the Grange. The couple lived in Berrien Center until his death in 1920.

Physical Description
The collection is composed of 0.50 cubic feet and it composed of thirty-two diaries. There are a few entries that are missing, but the majority of the date ranges are from 1869-1914. The diaries range in various sizes from 3”x6” to 4”x7”.
The majority of the diaries are in good condition with the exception of the 1869 diary. The majority of the diaries are written in pencil and ink, all of the entries are legible, a few older diaries have entries that are beginning to fade but even those are still legible. The covers are also in good condition, many of the covers are titled “Excelsior Diary” which was a type of diary that included information like cash accounts, yearly calendar, postage information, and other information such as units of measurements and currency exchange info.
The 1869 diary is in poor condition: the cover appears to be wrapped in fabric and is shredded and many of the entries are faded and difficult to read.
