Biographical / Historical

Myron A. Lovell was born August 20, 1818 in Albany, New York. He married Caroline Williams Lovell on February 1, 1840 in Cayuga, New York. They had one daughter, Florence (Flora) Lovell Rolfe on May 18, 1853. In the early 1850s, Myron bought several pieces of land in the village of Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1857, Myron and Caroline moved to Oshtemo, Michigan where they established a farm. Myron died September 28, 1905 and is buried with his wife and daughter in Alamo Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

This collection is 0.25 cubic feet and takes up one box. A large part of the collection contains the legal documents of Myron Lovell. These documents include land and mortgage deeds for land in New York, Battle Creek, Michigan, and Oshtemo, Michigan. The collection also contains Myron Lovell’s correspondence, tax information, and receipts. The documents are in good condition, but are fragile and yellowing due to age. In addition, the collection also contains land and mortgage deeds for Phillip Tidd, Abijah Course, Martin Chase, Benjamin Farley, Harriet Brown, Frederick Alchin, and various others. The documents are also in good condition, but are fragile and yellowing due to age.

Provenance

This collection contains a number of legal and tax documents ranging from 1839 to 1880 for Kalamazoo County. A large part of the collection includes land deeds, mortgages, and tax information for Myron and Caroline Lovell. The documents were donated to Western Michigan University Archives and Regional History by Karen Zantjer, and were collected by the donor’s aunt, Daisy Lofts.
