 Collection
Identifier: RH-A-3538

Scope and Contents

The collection contains two teacher's register books by Charlotte DeLano Ingerson (1838-1934). It is not known when she began teaching but the Teacher’s Register book begins in 1857 when she was nineteen. In the 1860 census she is recorded as a school teacher living with her parents. The last entry in the Teacher’s Register is in 1862 and the certification is for 1863 but it is not known when she stopped teaching although it may have been either when she married or right before.

On about half of the sheets is an alphabetical listing of students that Charlotte DeLano had during those terms along with their ages. She taught in Comstock Township and Cooper Township both in Kalamazoo County and Orangeville Township in Barry County. Just the names are recorded and no indication of attendance. There is a statement at the end of each term how long Charlotte taught and what she was paid.

Charlotte DeLano Ingerson (1838-1934) was the daughter of Ephraim and Nancy Gillett DeLano. Ephraim came to Cooper Township in 1834 from Providence, New York purchasing land in sections 8, 9, and 17 of the township. They built their house on the northeast corner of Douglas and C Avenues.

On April 10, 1865 she married Alonzo Ingerson (1820-1892) a farmer in Cooper Township. After his death, Charlotte went to live in Kalamazoo. There were two articles written about her in the Kalamazoo Gazette in 1924 and 1931.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and is composed of two items which include a teacher’s register book, 7 ¼” x 9” x ¼” and a sheet of paper 8” x 12”. The sheet of paper is a handwritten yearly statement signed by the three School Inspectors of Cooper Township on April 11, 1863 stating that Charlotte passed a satisfactory examination in a series of subjects, found to be of good moral character and licensed to teach in Cooper for one year. The writing is in brown ink and had been folded with the name “Miss C.R. DeLano” written at the top of one of the sides. The sheet is in fairly good condition although you can see where it had been folded and there are two holes at the top where it had been attached somewhere with a safety pin. The writing continues to be legible. The Teacher’s Register is 7 ¼” x 9” x ¼”. The binding is worn and as a result the front and back pages are loose. The title of the book is “School Register for Recording Attendance, Recitations and Deportment in Classes…” by N.C. Brooks. It said it was published in 1861 but the first written entries are May, 1857. In the front is printed in pencil, “Lottie R. DeLano Cooper, Michigan, May 5, 1857.”
