Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of an invitation card and constitution from the Kalamazoo Club. The constitution from 1890 lists the clubs rules, purpose, members, and location. The booklet also lists four house rules which include no tipping at the club house, no dogs, no soliciting subscription papers, and no more than two games of billiards in a row if other people are waiting to play. The invitation card is for a Ladies Evening for the member and any ladies in his family. Dress was company informal.

Biographical / Historical

The Kalamazoo Club was founded in 1889. The organization was created with the intent to further the growth and interests of Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo club was made up primarily of men of business and included W.E. Upjohn among its members. Initial membership was limited to 100 men. Shortly membership was slightly increased due to the amount of interest in joining the club. The club initially was located in the Basett house on the corner of Burdick St. and South St. In 1897 the club moved to the Fuller block. The Kalamazoo Club hosted social events, musical performances, and theater.

The collection is stored in one folder and occupies approximately 0.05 cubic feet. The collection contains a booklet of the constitution of the Kalamazoo club and an announcement for Ladies Evenings at the Club.
The booklet is 6 ½” x 4 ¾”. The Card is 3 ½” x 4 ½”. The condition is excellent, there is no major wear on either items.
