Scope and Contents

Photos of locations and events around Kalamazoo, Michigan, taken by Carl F. Tifft and dating from 1938-1942. Tifft took photos for and was part of the Clarage Fan Company basketball team. Tifft took photos of the Kalamazoo Lumber Fire which occurred in 1938, a parade put on by the circus in downtown Kalamazoo (undated), the Comstock Tornado in August 1939, Milham Park, the view of downtown Kalamazoo from inside the Hanselman Building, and photos of the Milham Offices. The bulk of the photos come from the Kalamazoo Lumber Fire and the Comstock Tornado. Biographical / Historical

Carl F. Tifft was born in Fairbault Minnesota on November 14, 1910 and appears in Kalamazoo on the 1920 census. Tifft was employed at the Clarage Fan Company in Kalamazoo for 41 years before retiring in 1975. Tifft died on Monday June 14, 1999.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .50 cubic feet. There are 100 photos taken by Carl F. Tifft in the collection. The photos sizes of photographs contained in the collection are 3” x 3”, 4” x 3”, 4” x 5”, 5” x 7”, 6” x 6”, 9” x 7”, and 8” x 10”. Most of the photos are printed on a thick matte finish photo paper, but there are a few which are printed on thin glossy photo paper. Some of the matte finish photographs have an attached backing to them to make them sturdier. The pamphlet is printed on thick paper and is held together with string. It has a depiction of City Hall on the front and a depiction of the dedication plaque on the back. Most of the photographs are in good condition. Many of the photographs that are on the glossy 8” x 10” paper are beginning to curl at the edges though. There are a few which are starting to show wear on the corners, and a few of the photographs are beginning to yellow. As a whole the collection is in good condition.

Provenance

The collection is composed of 100 photos taken by Carl F. Tifft of locations and events around Kalamazoo, and a pamphlet for the opening of the Kalamazoo City Hall. The photos with dates range from 1938-1942, but there are many photos which remain undated. The pamphlet for the opening of the Kalamazoo City Hall is from 1931.
