Physical Description

This collection is .50 cubic feet. The ledger is 13 inches by 9 inches in size. It is bound in cloth and leather. It is in decent condition with the binding still intact and most of the pages still completely legible, however, many pages have been torn out and the binding is fragile.

The ledger was also later used as a children’s sketch book and many of the pages have children’s doodles, games, and notes scribbled over the records.

The records inside the ledger include an alphabetized index to the account pages, financial accounts for many Leonidas residents. The middle portion of the ledger is dedicated to the county road supervisor’s records of roadwork and the taxes that paid for the road, many of these notes are labeled with the name H. C. Mcewen.

This collection contains one ledger from Ferris Wilcox and Co. in Leonidas, Michigan. The ledger contains financial accounts of Leonidas residents and records of road work done in Leonidas. The first page is dated January 23, 1888.

This item is from the Larry Syndergaard Collection, A-2237. A decision was made to make this ledger a separate collection.

The identity and purpose of the Ferris Wilcox and Co. is unknown.
