Memorial Day Program
Scope and Contents
The collection is composed of one brochure: "Exercises of Memorial Day at Bronson Park, Mountain Home, and Riverside Cemeteries, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Friday, May 30, 1890." Inside is information on activities for the day at all three locations along with names of individuals involved including members of the Women's Relief Corps. It also gives the parade route and the program at Bronson Park held in the afternoon along with members of the various committees.
The program lists many of those involved with the festivities.

Biographical / Historical
According to the website, Memorial Day was officially proclaimed in 1868. According to the Kalamazoo Gazette in America's Historical Newspapers, the first entry for celebrating this holiday is June 2, 1871 although it may have begun earlier and there is no digital paper to verify it. For the year 1890, there were many entries discussing their preparation for the day. An article two days before the event reports on a meeting of the committees and subcommittees for the day stating that $150.50 had been raised to pay for expenses.

Physical Description
The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and is composed of one brochure, 4 ½” x 8” (9” x 8” unfolded). The program was printed on tan paper very similar to newsprint. There are folds at various locations with some tears at the folds. There also are smudges on the cover.
