Scope and Contents

The local chapter of the Women's Christian Temperance Union began in 1877, organized by Mary Pengelly (1825-1911) who became involved with the state and national organization. By 1898 the organization was named for her. It was located in several different sites and even purchased a home at 301 Woodward in 1910 for its use. The booklet contains the subject and location of their weekly meetings, a list of officers, various vice-presidents from the local churches, superintendents and general members along with their addresses.

Abstract

The collection is composed of one booklet, 6 ¾"x5 ¼" dated 1906-1907 from the Pengelly Woman's Christian Temperance Union located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The booklet listed activities for the year and a list of members.

Source of Acquisition

This booklet had been in the Kalamazoo Public Library collection (A-441) but a decision was made to divide the collection into separate collections.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and is composed of one booklet, 6 ¾"x5 ¼" with a total of sixteen pages. The pages are glossy and the cover is a light green heavier paper with black-and-white printing. The booklet has information about the activities of the organization for the 1906-1907 year along with members' names and addresses. The booklet is in good shape. The cover is slightly faded and on it are stamped words put on by the Kalamazoo Public Library where this item came such as "Reference Department" and "Kalamazoo-Organizations-W.C.T.U." along with an orange dot.
