Scope and Contents

The first document is a contract between David Merrill and William McCourtie with William A. Doyle who was to build the building. The contract gives specific guidelines for the cellar, size and height of 3-story building, thickness of walls, division of rooms, amount of paint, installation of cement walk and types of fixtures. The contract also states that the building would resemble the Fuller Block across the street with bay windows in the front and verandas. It also gives the conditions for how the contractor (Doyle) would get paid and how he would be penalized if the work was not done on time. The contract was signed on September 28, 1885 and work was to be done by December 1886. Total to be paid to William Doyle was to be $6,910.00. Merrill and McCourtie would each pay half of the costs. The contract is signed by Merrill, McCourtie and Doyle. At the top of the contract is a statement that [John] Bassett deeded 100 feet west of Burdick to DeVisser on November 27, 1886. On the back of the contract are the words, “Agreement D.B. Merrill and W.H. McCourtie with W.A. Doyle.”
