Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Celery City Dirt was a newsletter, that appears to have been printed twice a month, produced for the local Kalamazoo soldiers during World War II. It was filled with all types of information about weather, business, sports, jokes, addresses, schools and just general information. Western's purchase of the Old Gateway Golf Course is mentioned along with activities of various local individuals. No listing of who specifically was responsible for the newsletter however the address listed was 132 Edgemoor, Kalamazoo 34, Michigan which was the home for Clifford Povenz who was a vice-president for Crescent Engraving. The August 4, 1944 issue reports that it is the second issue coming from the offices of Crescent Engraving. Previous to that the group met at various homes and at the Arctic Ice Cream Company. All of the newsletters have envelopes addressed to the servicemen who were getting the newsletter. Five of them were sent to Dean Arend (A-1191), the other one was sent to Victor E. Lewis.
