Scope and Contents
R. H. C. Davis's archaeological notebook dating from May 14 to September 7, 1935. The notebook opens with a handwritten title which reads "Archaeological Notebook II" and is followed by two photographs: the first of the inner gateway of Reading Annex and the second a group portrait of students. Handwriting on the back of the photograph indicates the date and the event. Following the photographs is a pamphlet titled "A Brief History of the Palace of the Bishops of Bath and Wells". The content describes the history of the site and palace of Jocelin, last Bishop of Bath. A summary on the first page of the notebook reads: "includes notes on two churches of rank, two churches of the second rank, four abbey ruins, and seventeen parish churches. Districts visited: Reading district, North Oxfordshire, Parts of Somersetshire and Geneva." The notebook ends with loose material inserted after the last page. Inserted material includes scrap paper with notes in various pen followed by drawings of Mason's marks on the West Tower of Wells of Saint Cuthbert’s. All entries are dated, and some have two separate dates. The first when Davis first visited the site and the second indicates re-visits in 1961 and 1973.

The notebook opens with a photograph of the inner gateway of Reading Annex, followed by a group portrait photograph of students from the Summer School at Geneva taken in Summer 1935. Text on the back of photograph describes the date and circumstances. Throughout the notebook are hand-drawn examples of architectural details. Details include examples of moulding, a vaulting rib, base of columns, rough sections of abacus, floorplan of Glastonbury Abby (Somerset) in colored pencil, a Maltese or Patee Cross, window tracery, stringcourse, base mould in Nave pillars, section of a pier, illustrations from references, plan of treasury vault in Wells Cathedral, plan of a bay in a chapel, rough sketches of jambs, a tower base, plan of Garderobe in Cleeve Abbey, exaggerated plan of the South Aisle of Spaxton Church, and a rough section of Chancel in Spaxton Church. Many illustrations are not to scale.
