Dwight Bryant Waldo served as Western Michigan University's first president for 32 years until his retirement in 1936. He was born in Arcade, N.Y., June 13, 1864, in the final year of the American Civil War and was noted for his scholarship on the life of Abraham Lincoln. He died Oct. 29, 1939, at age 75.
