Wooden, John, 1910-2010
Person
Biography
After a modest start at UCLA in the late 1940s, Wooden built a dynasty during which his Bruins won a record 10 NCAA national championships. His 88-game winning streak is the longest in major collegiate basketball history, and is a mark that is unlikely to be exceeded.
Wooden also had a notable connection with WMU. While coaching at South Bend Central High School in the 1940s, Wooden steered the late Harold Gensichen to the legendary Bronco coach Herbert “Buck” Read. Today Gensichen is still regarded by many as the greatest basketball player in Bronco history. For a full biography, see his editorial.
