Yeckley School (Barry County, Mich.)

 Organization

Biography

The Yeckley school district no.9 was founded in 1868 and it ran as a one room schoolhouse until 1955. The one room schoolhouse was located on the corner of Yeckley and Biddle roads in Rutland Twp., Barry County., Michigan. For the year 1922 in the program the school had one teacher, Mrs. Myrtie Williams. They also had three school officers, George Marble-Director, Homer Yeckley-Moderator, and Mrs. Adah Hubbard- Treasurer. After it had closed in 1955 students of this schoolhouse and many other schoolhouses consolidated into the Hastings Area, Thornapple Kellogg or Delton Kellogg school systems. Around the 1950s many one room schoolhouses like Yeckley closed due to the growing population and the school systems above were much bigger to accommodate all the surrounding one room schoolhouses instead of having a one room schoolhouse every 10 miles.

Since Yeckley closed, the last update in the Michigan One Room Schoolhouse Association, the schoolhouse is being used as a residence.
