Clarage Foundry and Manufacturing (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
Biography
Thomas Clarage and Charles A. Bird founded the Bird and Clarage Foundry, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1878. The foundry manufactured steam engines and mill machinery and specialized in the "Bird Windmill". Charles Bird withdrew from the business in 1885 and the company became Thomas Clarage and Sons. Between 1905 and 1913 the company was known as Clarage Foundry and Manufacturing Company. By 1915 when the majority of the business was in making fans and blowers, the company name was changed to Clarage Fan Company. In 1967 Zurn Industries acquired Clarage Fan and the company continued as a part of Zurn's Air Systems Division.
